Class Descriptions

The following International Ballroom Syllabus classes are offered by the UADC during the fall and winter terms. Each term consists of nine classes that are 1.5 hours in length. All classes cover two dances per class.

Newcomer I

This is a beginner class that introduces the basic steps for the main ballroom dances. The dances taught include Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive and Samba and sometimes Paso Doble. Unless you know the basic steps for all of these dances, this is the class for you. One to two terms of Newcomer I are recommended before advancing to Newcomer II. People with two left feet are welcome!

Newcomer II

This class is an intermediate class that builds on the basic steps learned in Newcomer I. Dancers are expected to know the basic steps in all the ballroom dances taught in Newcomer I. This class introduces more patterns, new dances, and additional technique with emphasis on lead and follow. The dances taught include Cha-Cha, Foxtrot, Jive, Quickstep, Rumba, Samba, Tango, Waltz, and sometimes Paso Doble, One to two terms of Newcomer II are recommended before advancing to Pre-Bronze.

Pre-Bronze

This class has more content and progresses much faster than previous classes. This class reviews the previous levels’ steps while adding technique, plus learning one or two new patterns in each dance. Cha-Cha, Foxtrot, Jive, Quickstep, Rumba, Samba, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Waltz, and Paso Doble will be taught. This class develops your skills as a social dancer and is good preparation for the Bronze class. One to two terms of Pre-Bronze are recommended before advancing to Bronze.

Bronze

This class continues from Pre-Bronze and focuses on four of the ten international style dances. Dances are chosen at the discretion of our professional dance instructor(s). ‘Routines’ are taught with emphasis on the social aspect of learning patterns that can be easily interchanged with one another.

Silver

Four ‘routines’ will be taught in a similar format to Bronze level. Participants are advised to have done Bronze level once or twice before progressing to Silver. Silver level classes will be taught at a greater pace and depth than other dance classes.
