Class Descriptions

The following International Ballroom Syllabus classes are offered by the UADC during the fall and winter terms. Each term consists of nine classes that are 1.5 hours in length. All classes cover two dances per class.

Newcomer I

This is a beginner class that introduces the basic steps for the main ballroom dances. The dances taught include Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive and Samba. Unless you know the basic steps for all of these dances, this is the class for you. One to two terms of Newcomer I are recommended before advancing to Newcomer II. People with two left feet are welcome!

Newcomer II

This class is an intermediate class that builds on the basic steps learned in Newcomer I. Dancers are expected to know the basic steps in all the ballroom dances taught in Newcomer I. This class introduces more patterns, new dances, and additional technique with emphasis on lead and follow. The dances taught include Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, Samba, and Tango. One to two terms of Newcomer II are recommended before advancing to Pre-Bronze.

Pre-Bronze

This class has more content and progresses much faster than previous classes. The first portion of each class focuses on lead and follow, technique, and patterns taught in the previous levels. The second portion of the class focuses on learning one or two new patterns and linking them to the previous week’s technique. This class develops your skills as a social dancer and is good preparation for the Bronze class. The dances taught include Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz, Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, Samba, and Tango. One to two terms of Pre-Bronze are recommended before advancing to Bronze.

Bronze

The Bronze class continues from Pre-Bronze but with a stronger focus on the eight core dances: Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango, Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive and Samba. Short patterns and technique will be covered. Limited emphasis is placed on learning routines and more on the social aspect of learning patterns that can be easily interchanged with one another. This class is for the dancer who wants to further improve their social dance skills but will still be of interest to those interested in participating in DanceSport Alberta (DSAB) sanctioned competitions.

Silver

This class introduces Silver level figures to dancers already comfortable with Bronze level material. The focus is on the eight core dances: Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango, Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive and Samba. Short patterns and technique will be covered. This class is for the dancer who wants to further improve their social dance skills but will still be of interest to those interested in participating in DanceSport Alberta (DSAB) sanctioned competitions.

Class Policies

The following is a partial list of UADC Class Policies:

  1. The UADC has a No Refunds policy, which includes fees paid for classes.
  2. We accept cash, credit cards, and debit cards. (Sorry, no cheques.)
  3. UADC membership is required to register in UADC classes, workshops, and to attend Open Practice Dance Sessions.
  4. All members must present their membership card as proof of membership before they will be permitted to register in a class.
  5. For your safety, jumps and lifts are not taught, nor are they permitted during any classes or events.
  6. Switching classes is permitted for the first 2 weeks if there is space and if the gender ratios allow it. Come to the first night of the class in which you originally registered (unless unable to do so, in which case go to the class into which you want to switch), and speak to the UADC Executive member on duty.
  7. UADC members may register in as many classes as they like, subject to gender ratios.

Registration is on a first come, first served basis and entails the following:

  1. We do not reserve classes for people or have waiting lists.
  2. We cannot make any guarantees that the class you want will have space available for your friends and/or family.

We have a responsibility to keep the male / female partner ratios reasonable in each class, therefore:

  1. We may cut off registration in certain classes to either males or females for a period of time in order to keep the ratios as close a possible.
  2. Although you do not need a partner to register in a class, it is advisable to register with one, as it is usually easier to get into classes as a couple.
  3. Students with non-student partners are advised to wait until non-student registration to sign up as a couple, as we will not allow any non-students to register prior to non-student registration.
